Top bowlers battle

It was a tough day on the green for the Warracknabeal Bowls Club as they took on the best clubs across the Wimmera.

Warracknabeal Bowls Club battled the region’s best but faced a tough day at Rupanyup, finishing third after three competitive rounds. The midweek side also faced strong opposition, taking on Chalambar, Donald Golf and Horsham City at Ararat VRI.

Travelling to Rupanyup on Saturday, March 14, the North Wimmera Bowls Playing Area champions faced off against Wycheproof (North Central), Horsham Golf (Wimmera), and Chalambar Golf (Grampians).

They battled through three action-packed rounds.

In the opening round, Warracknabeal faced Horsham Golf and fell 42-34.

Shane Powell, Peter Anderson, Edna Anderson and skipper Ron Baron won the first rink 17-11.

Meanwhile, Michelle Powell, Noreen Belot, Brian Taylor and skipper Josh Barry lost 17-8, and Shane Langman, Gary McLean, Abunda (Jing) Robertson and Graeme Shalders were also defeated 14-9.

Warracknabeal then faced eventual champions Chalamar Golf but suffered a 59-26 defeat (23-8, 16-10, 20-8).

In the final game of the day, however, Warracknabeal managed to walk away with a 41-40 win against Wycheproof.

The North Central champs took the first rink 10-7, but Warracknabeal responded with narrow 19-16 and 15-14 victories on the second and third rinks.

By the end of play, Warracknabeal finished third overall, with each team recording one rink win across the day.

On Wednesday, March 18, the midweek North Wimmera winners took on Donald Golf (North Central), Chalambar Golf (Grampians) and Horsham City (Wimmera) at the Ararat VRI Bowls Club.

Warracknabeal lost its first game to Chalambar 46-36.

Simon Cousins, Michael Hall, Noreen Belot, and Graeme Shalders lost a tight game 15-13; Laurel Arnold, Brendon Bibby, Brian Taylor and Edna Anderson lost 21-10; while Michelle Powell, Shane Powell, William Kerr, and Abunda (Jing) Robertson won 13-10.

Against Donald Golf, Warrackneal lost 39-28 (16-8, 12-7, 11-13).

In the last game of the day, Horsham City swept Warracknabeal 53-40 (16-10, 22-17, 15-12).
