Thunder storms for first win of season
The Burras couldn't halt the Thunder from getting their first win of the season, 7.11 (53) to 12.14 (86) on Saturday.
Minyip Murtoa held the lead at the end of the first quarter, 2.3 (15) to 1.4 (10), and at half-time, 5.5 (35) to 4.6 (30).
But the Thunder had the game on their terms heading into the last quarter, leading 10.10 (70) to 7.9 (51).
A further 2.4 from the Thunder in the last quarter sealed their win as the Burras could find only a couple of points.
Thunder coaching director Jake Bridges said the Thunder's performance was pleasing and it was a great step forward for the side.
"From a coaching perspective, the most encouraging part was how the group adjusted after quarter time – we tightened up a few things in our system and the players executed it really well," Bridges said.
"Our connection lifted across the ground and our pressure became far more consistent and relentless.
"The third quarter was built off that; we simplified things, trusted our method and the players brought great energy around the contest, which gave us territory and opportunities for scoring."
Bridges said in the last quarter, it was a real team effort defensively.
"Our backs held up strongly but it started higher up the ground with our midfield and forwards applying pressure and denying Minyip Murtoa clean ball movement," Bridges said.
"There were a number of strong contributors but it was more about the collective – we had even contributions across the board, which is what we’re trying to build."
But the coaching director said there were learnings still for the side to take from the game and he also praised the Burras on their efforts and the way they played.
Better players for the losing side included Dusty Cross and Nic Ballagh, while for the victors it was Bailey Edwards and Zachary Robins who led the way.
Major goal scorers were Ballagh with three for the Burras, and Coleman Schache and Edwards, also with three majors, for the Thunder.
The Thunder have a game off this Saturday, with the only match being held being between Horsham sides the Demons and the Saints.
Southern Mallee will next play on May 2, when they are on the road to Coughlin Park against Horsham Saints.
