Meech claims feature: Rintoule remembered in memorial race at Horsham
It was an afternoon of celebrations at the Horsham & District Racing Club as the community came together to remember the iconic Dallas Rintoule on Monday, April 27.
Rintoule, a former police officer, publican and racing enthusiast, was remembered in race 8 with the 1100m Dallas Rintoule Memorial, won by Stawell jockey Linda Meech.
Prizes, donated by Horsham jockeys Dean Yendall and Christine Puls, included a large jar of lollies, which Meech instantly recognised.
“Dallas Rintoule was a really awesome person,” Meech told racing.com.
“He used to bring the lollies and cheer us all up. If we're having a bad day riding, he would help us, you know.
“I can't tell you how much he's missed by everybody. He was just a tremendous bloke.”
Riding the Tom Dabernig-trained Tangoette, Linda Meech timed her run perfectly.
Sitting seventh on the bend, the five-year-old powered ahead in the last 400m to beat front-runner Shimshalar and Our Little Star by less than half a length.
The win marked Tangoette's back-to-back victories, following its win in Warracknabeal on Easter Saturday.
“She's got bigger and stronger every time I've ridden her,” Meech told racing.com.
“She's really relaxed and a really very happy horse.”
It was Meech’s second win of the day, riding NZ gelding Pro Aussie to victory in race five.
In other results, Paul Preusker claimed race four with Bellsym and race six with Wimmera Star.
