The 1996 Southern Mallee Football League grand final match for the reserves was played between the Berri-Culgoa Tigers and the Hopetoun Devils at the Hopetoun Recreation Reserve on September 7.
The game report read that Berri-Culgoa led Hopetoun at each change before taking out a 17-point win.
Hopetoun could not get their game flowing, and this was attributed to the tackling of the Tigers plus the swirling wind.
Cain Barry covered a lot of area from the centre to send the Tigers forward often.
Justin Kelly, Kim Renney and Steve Connor were solid in defence, and Darren Weir was a bush ruck rover.
Graeme Price and Ross Brown defended well for Hopetoun while Daryl Gunn, Warne Derrick and Dick Harberger were under notice often for the Devils.
A disappointment for the Devils and the first leg of a winning double for the Tigers.
The final score was Berri-Culgoa, 7.10 (52), Hopetoun, 5.5 (35).
