Fatal truck crash closes Western Highway

Victoria Police are investigating a fatal truck crash in Ararat.

Investigators were told a truck traveling east on the Western Highway crashed into a tree 500m east of Heath Street at 4.20am on Thursday, August 20.

"The truck was engulfed in flames and the driver, who is yet to be formally identified, sadly died at the scene," a spoksperson said.

"The Western Highway remains blocked in both directions and diversions are in place."

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.

To date, 154 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads this year.
