Call for First Aid heroes

ST John Ambulance Victoria is calling on Victorians to nominate everyday heroes for the 2026 First Aid Champion Awards, recognising individuals who have stepped up in critical moments to save lives or prevent serious injury using first aid.

Quick-thinking first responders in medical emergencies can be nominated for the 2026 First Aid Champion Awards, run by St John Ambulance Victoria.

From children who call Triple Zero to bystanders performing CPR and community members staying calm under pressure, these awards celebrate the extraordinary impact of ordinary people.

The 2026 awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, August 4, at the Horizon Room at Marvel Stadium, hosted by Carolyn Creswell, founder of Carman’s Fine Foods.

She has her own personal connection to the importance of first aid – Carolyn survived a near-fatal choking incident at home after her life was saved by the immediate action of her husband and friends.

The overall winner for the 2025 First Aid Champion Awards was Kiri Ferres-Jones, who was recognised for her outstanding first aid response in a critical situation while at a local market.

In June 2024, Kiri witnessed a woman collapse with a severe leg injury – while others stood by, she acted immediately.

She applied pressure to the wound, called an ambulance, and when the woman stopped breathing, Kiri began CPR.

Her quick thinking and calm response helped restore the woman’s breathing and stabilise her until paramedics arrived.

St John Ambulance Victoria chief executive Gordon Botwright said stories like Kiri’s highlight why first aid skills are so critical.

“These awards are about more than recognition; they’re about showcasing the life-saving power of first aid and the people who make a difference when it matters most,” he said.

“Whether it’s a trained volunteer at a major event or a member of the public stepping in during an emergency, these moments show how vital it is to have the confidence and skills to act.”

Nominations are now open – this year’s First Aid Champion Awards will recognise individuals across multiple categories, including Youth, Workplace, Community and Volunteer First Aid Champions.

Anyone can nominate, including self-nominations, and nominees do not need to have trained with St John; they only need to have used first aid in a real-life situation.

Submit a nomination online at stjohnvic.com.au/champions – closing date is Friday, June 26.
